The Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival

This two-day event at the picturesque Snape Maltings on the River Alde is a great opportunity to see lots of producers and makers in one place or learn a culinary skill, plus there’s demos, talks and farmers’ market. Book your tickets early and arrive by cycle or public transport.

The festival is on the weekend of September 26-27.

Where to stay: As well as great self-catering accommodation at Snape Maltings itself, you could stay in a luxury cottage at Mollett’s Farm, or a Landmark Trust Martello Tower. In Aldeburgh itself there are two excellent hotels, The Brudenell and White Lion, and in Saxmundham there’s The Bell Hotel.

Book a visit to Bury St Edmunds

Home of England’s first patron saint, Bury St Edmunds already has a reputation for being Suffolk’s foodie capital and the UK’s most dog-friendly town. Now it’s the turn of books. The Bury St Edmunds Literature Festival takes place between 8-11 October with talks, discussions and event with a range of authors.

While you’re here for a short break, take in a show at The Theatre Royal, the UK’s last Regency theatre, enjoy wandering the town’s higgledy-piggledy streets and marketplace, and have a bimble around the Abbey Gardens which hosts the cathedral. And to really get under the skin of this charming town, book yourself on a tour.

Where to stay: The Angel Hotel is where Charles Dickens stayed when in town for readings. The Ickworth Hotel is in the grounds of National Trust estate. The Pear Tree Inn has seven ultra-luxe rooms.

Spot an otter

RSPB Minsmere is an atmospheric nature reserve on the Suffolk coast with woods, lagoons and wetland, nature trails and your chance to spot some of the UK’s rarest wildlife, including an impressive variety of birds, such as avocets, bearded tits and bitterns. Look out for otters, water voles, wild horses and it's the best time for the deer rutting.

There are Autumn events aplenty, including Sunset Strolls, Women’s Walks and Autumn Discovery and if you’re in a group you can hire a guide.

Quiet wildlife spotting in the Broads

Hire a canoe or boat from Hippersons, Waveney River Centre or Three Rivers and explore this quiet backwater of the Broads National Park on the River Waveney. Relax on the calm water, be still and the wildlife will come to you. Look out for otters, kingfishers, herons and swans.

Why not head to the Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve which has lots of information boards and a good café.

Discover seafood and shellfish on the Suffolk Coast

Take a relaxing short break along a stretch of stunning coastline that includes sandy beaches, low cliffs and tidal estuaries which are perfect for shellfish. Lobsters and seafood are brought in at Lowestoft and Aldeburgh and available from shacks on Aldeburgh seafront and the working Blackshore Harbour, Southwold. Orford is the place to go for smoked products.

Flat racing continues into the Autumn at Newmarket, with race days through September and October. From September 25-27, enjoy the thrilling racing and epic Oktoberfest celebrations.

Linger a while in Newmarket and take in the early-morning Gallops when the town’s 3000 horses are put through their paces, take a tour of the National Stud and visit the National Horse Racing Museum and Royal Palace. Take a tour with Discover Newmarket.

Don’t miss Constable 250

It’s the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable, and Suffolk is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the East Bergholt-born landscape painter. At Flatford, where he composed some of his most famous works, there are guided tours until September 26. Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury hosts a Gainsborough, Turner and Constable exhibition until October 11 and Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich has Constable shows until Spring 2027, including a loan of The Hay Wain, Constable’s most renowned work.

Enjoy the Great Feast

The Great Feast is a new food and drink festival at Euston Hall on September 26-27. The event brings together incredible food, drink, live entertainment and countryside experiences including 150 stalls and free things to do. Discover viral street food, live cooking, artisan markets, family entertainment and unique themed areas packed with fun around every corner.

Combine the festival with a trip to Thetford Forest for amazing wildlife in England’s largest low-lying forest.

Enjoy the Suffolk Wine Trail

Suffolk’s vineyards have teamed up with Visit Suffolk to create a new Suffolk Wine Trail across the county that includes established estates and small family-run producers and goes from the Shotley Peninsula and Stour Valley to Bury St Edmunds. Build a short break around a vineyard tour or two, plus countryside walks, farm shops, charming historic market towns and picturesque villages. Or build a tour around a Cycle Break.
