The Brecks
Rare + Rugged
The Brecks in Suffolk
Shaped by Neolithic flint mining, rugged heath, huge forests, chalk streams to wild swim and surprising pockets of Ice Age water, the Brecks feels unlike anywhere else in the country. It’s a place for nature, with daylight and dusk bringing the chance of rare birds and quiet, memorable moments, with star-illuminated night skies to follow. Explore on foot or by bike along waymarked trails through Thetford Forest, where solitude and silence give you the chance to see deer and wild horses. Look out for unusual features: Pingo ponds, striking Deal Rows, prehistoric sites, a Viking legacy and atmospheric ruins in Thetford. With one of the driest climates in the UK, it suits year-round outdoor days. Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds are excellent gateways to the Brecks. Come for the space, stillness and wildness, leave feeling reset.
