Woodbridge is a picturesque and vibrant market town on the banks of the River Deben with a bustling Thoroughfare and town centre of independent shops, cafes, delis, restaurants and pubs. There are regular markets for food, crafts and vintage on Market Hill next to the lovely Shire Hall.

On the edge the Suffolk Coast & Heaths National Landscape, Woodbridge has a history of rope-making, sail-making and boat-building - Sir Francis Drake had his fighting ships built at Woodbridge. Discover more at the Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum, one of only two in the UK and the earliest.

Vibrant Framlingham has Anglo Saxon origins but can be traced back to 1086 when it appeared in The Domesday Book. The triangular Market Hill, which hosts farmers' markets, is surrounded by period buildings, including the former Guildhall and The Crown, a 16th century coaching inn, as well as independent shops, cafes and restaurants.

Highlight of Framlingham is the well-preserved 12th century castle, built by the Bigod family, overlooking a shallow mere. The castle has a good museum, and you can walk the battlements.

Stay at The Bell Hotel Saxmundham, Mollett's Farm or Oak Tree Farm B&B.

Sutton Hoo is England’s ‘Valley of the Kings’

What is there to do in The Heart of Suffolk?

The unique Sutton Hoo is England’s ‘Valley of the Kings’, the 7th century cemetery for the royal dynasty of East Anglia, the Wuffingas, who claimed descent from the god Woden.

It’s thought that many of the 18 or so burial mounds were looted over time, but in 1939, in the King’s Mound, amateur archaeologist Basil Brown discovered the richest burial ever found in northern Europe, that of King Rædwald, laid to rest in a 90ft long ship, surrounded by his extraordinary treasure.

The story is retold in the Netflix movie ‘The Dig’ starring Ralph Fiennes, Carey Mulligan and Lily James.
