The Heart of Suffolk covers the hinterland of Suffolk in East Anglia in the East of England, around 80 miles from London and 150 miles from Birmingham.
How do I get to The Heart of Suffolk?
The Heart of Suffolk is easily accessible from across the country. It takes around an hour to get to Ipswich by rail from London Liverpool Street. Needham Market and Stowmarket are the next steps on the line. A branch line goes to Woodbridge.

Suffolk’s culinary traditions run deep in The Heart of Suffolk. Local pubs serve Adnams ales, celebrating the county’s strong brewing heritage, while farm shops are well stocked with locally produced cheeses, artisan breads and seasonal produce. Farmers’ markets showcase the region’s abundance of foodie delights from field to fork.

Ipswich serves as the destination’s cultural hub. The regenerated Waterfront along the River Orwell has transformed a former Victorian wet dock into a buzzing quarter of converted warehouse galleries, waterside restaurants, Salthouse hotel, and the University of Suffolk campus.

Ancient House, with its intricate pargeting and decorative facade, stands as one of England’s finest examples of Tudor architecture, while Christchurch Mansion houses an impressive collection of Gainsborough and Constable paintings.

Woodbridge has lots of eateries
Woodbridge is a picturesque and vibrant market town on the banks of the River Deben with a bustling Thoroughfare and town centre of independent shops, cafes, delis, restaurants and pubs. There are regular markets for food, crafts and vintage on Market Hill next to the lovely Shire Hall.
On the edge the Suffolk Coast & Heaths National Landscape, Woodbridge has a history of rope-making, sail-making and boat-building - Sir Francis Drake had his fighting ships built at Woodbridge. Discover more at the Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum, one of only two in the UK and the earliest.

Vibrant Framlingham has Anglo Saxon origins but can be traced back to 1086 when it appeared in The Domesday Book. The triangular Market Hill, which hosts farmers' markets, is surrounded by period buildings, including the former Guildhall and The Crown, a 16th century coaching inn, as well as independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
Highlight of Framlingham is the well-preserved 12th century castle, built by the Bigod family, overlooking a shallow mere. The castle has a good museum, and you can walk the battlements.

Mid Suffolk Light Railway

Needham Lakes

Look out for roaming peacocks and don't miss Emmetts Smokehouse, Fine Foods Store & Cafe in Peasenhall and antique shops in Yoxford; Halesworth featured in the Richard Curtis film Yesterday, Prince Alexandre of Belgium was married in Debenham in 1991, and Eye has the remains of an 11th century motte and bailey castle.
Hoxne has a memorial which claims to mark the spot where King Edmund was martyred by the Vikings and had his head cut off.
Laxfield has lovely architecture, museum and The King's Head pub, also known as The Low House – this 16th century thatched pub does not have a bar and instead serves beer straight from the casks in the Tap Room.

What is there to do in The Heart of Suffolk?
The unique Sutton Hoo is England’s ‘Valley of the Kings’, the 7th century cemetery for the royal dynasty of East Anglia, the Wuffingas, who claimed descent from the god Woden.
It’s thought that many of the 18 or so burial mounds were looted over time, but in 1939, in the King’s Mound, amateur archaeologist Basil Brown discovered the richest burial ever found in northern Europe, that of King Rædwald, laid to rest in a 90ft long ship, surrounded by his extraordinary treasure.
The story is retold in the Netflix movie ‘The Dig’ starring Ralph Fiennes, Carey Mulligan and Lily James.

Where was The Dig filmed?
The Netflix film The Dig was not filmed at Sutton Hoo, although it depicts the story of the unearthing of Anglo Saxon King Raedwalk’s burial site and treasures there in 1939.
