NT Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time and where tales of kings and buried treasure guarantee a full day out for the whole family.Visit the Royal Burial Ground, climb to the top of the 17-metre viewing tower and discover the history and mystery of this beautiful place, where 1,400 years ago, a king or great warrior of East Anglia was laid to rest in a 90ft ship surrounded by his treasure.You can find out more about this and what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons in our High Hall exhibition space, where you can dress up like a warrior or a king and see replicas of the objects unearthed from Sutton Hoo over the past 80 years.Discover what it's really like to be an archaeologist on the eve of a discovery inside Tranmer House, where you'll also find images from the 1939 excavation and find out more about Mrs Edith Pretty, the former landowner who commissioned the dig.There's plenty to see and do outdoors, too. Hop, skip and jump your way across the adventure playground, spot wildlife and wildflowers on a nature walk, take in views over the River Deben, and explore the Design and Legend sculpture trail, where you can find out more about Anglo-Saxon beasts. The paths and buildings are pushchair and buggy-friendly, so they're suitable for little explorers, too!When you're feeling peckish, head to King's River Cafe for something to eat or bring your own picnic and enjoy the view from one of our many picnic spots. You can also find your next great read in our secondhand bookshop or pick up a souvenir from the gift shop to help you remember your visit.Sutton Hoo is a great place to visit throughout the year, with a great line-up of family-friendly events and an incredible landscape which changes with the seasons.
