What is Constable Country?
Constable Country, famous for its associations with the painter John Constable RA, England's finest landscape artist, is an area of south Suffolk that encompasses the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale National Landscape. It is an area that has remained remarkably unchanged since the early 19th century when Constable captured its pastoral beauty.
As tranquil now as it was then and with long distance views from higher ground in a region associated with large skies, you’ll be transported back to a time of Romanticism and Regency. It won’t be long before you come face to face with a masterpiece or two in a scene that has hardly changed in 200 years.

What is Dedham Vale?
The Dedham Vale National Landscape, formerly an Area of Outstanding natural Beauty (AONB), is an iconic lowland river valley. The picturesque River Stour becomes a wide estuary at Manningtree to the sea at Felixstowe and Harwich. The vale has historic villages with timber-framed housing and prominent churches, grazing marshes and water meadows, riverside mills and winding paths to explore and discover wildlife.

Where is Suffolk’s Constable Country, Dedham Vale and Stour Valley in England?
Constable Country and the Dedham Vale National Landscape stretch along the River Stour for nearly 14 miles between Wormingford and Manningtree, on the Essex-Suffolk border, and includes Dedham, East Bergholt, Nayland, Stoke-by-Nayland and other historic villages. It covers an area of approximately 35 square miles.
How do I get to Constable Country and Dedham Vale?
Constable Country is in East Anglia in the East of England, around 75 miles from London and 150 miles from Birmingham, just 15 miles north-east of Colchester. By rail it takes an hour to get to Manningtree station from London Liverpool Street.
From the station you can take a waymarked seven-mile walk to Flatford Mill, scene of some of John Constable’s iconic paintings.
Constable Country, Dedham Vale and Stour Valley is a quiet, rural landscape where traffic can have a big impact on the environment. If you can, please consider using public transport to get around. This is also an area easily enjoyed on foot or by cycle.

What is in Dedham Vale?
Flatford lies at the heart of Dedham Vale, the unspoilt hamlet where Constable created his masterpieces. Standing beside Flatford Mill or Willy Lott’s House, you can step directly into the scenes he painted. The view across the mill pond remains virtually unchanged since Constable set up his easel here in the 1820s. Flatford is best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light echoes his golden palette.
Flatford Mill was owned by Constable's father and Willy Lott was a tenant farmer. It’s said he was born in the house and never left if for more than four days in his lifetime. Living in such stunning scenery, you wouldn’t either.
East Bergholt, Constable’s birthplace, offers a more intimate glimpse into the artist’s world. Wander the lanes where he grew up among traditional Suffolk cottages, then visit St. Mary’s church where his parents are buried. The churchyard houses one of England’s few remaining wooden bell cages – a unique Suffolk oddity that Constable would have known well.

Dedham retains its Georgian and Tudor character with beautiful period buildings lining the main street as well as teas rooms and independent shops. The medieval tower of St. Mary the Virgin dominates the skyline just as it does in Constable’s paintings. Inside you can see his work The Ascension. The village offers excellent walking access to the painted landscapes.
The work of equestrian artist Sir Alfred Munnings is celebrated in the Munnings Art Museum, the artist's former home in the village.
Take refreshments at the tea rooms or discover beautiful riverside pubs and restaurants nearby, such as Le Talbooth – which also has an Art Trail – or The Anchor.
Nearby Stratford St Mary is a picturesque village with a fifteenth-century flint faced church and Grade II listed house Ravenys which inspired Constable to paint A House in Water Lane, now displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

What is in Sudbury?
Sudbury, surrounded by water meadows, makes an ideal base for exploring the region, with good transport links and plenty of accommodation options. This market town was also the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, celebrated at the impressive Gainsborough’s House, a Grade I-listed Georgian merchant house with exhibition galleries set in period gardens.

Sudbury Water Meadows offer beautiful scenery and riverside trails in a tranquil landscape, with wildlife, mill cottages and a weir.
This is still the ‘Silk Capital’ of the UK, producing much of the country’s high-quality silk, with silk mills still operating in the town.
The protected Dedham Vale offers endless walking opportunities along riverside paths and through the rolling countryside that inspired not only Constable, but also Gainsborough and twentieth-century artist Sir Alfred Munnings. The popular Hadleigh circular walk combines historic timber-framed houses with countryside views along a disused railway line.
